Entry Nine: "The Text That Changes Everything"

Dear Moon,
I thought moving forward meant leaving everything behind.
I'm on my couch, Friday night, the lamp casting warm light across the room.
My phone is in my hand. The dating apps are open. I'm swiping, left, left, left... not really looking, just going through the motions.
A guy with a boat. A guy holding a fish. A guy whose entire profile is gym selfies.
I feel nothing.
Not disappointment. Not hope. Just... tired.
I close the app. Set my phone face-down on the cushion beside me. Lean my head back and stare at the ceiling.
It's been a week since the good man stepped back.
A week of sitting with the relief and the grief in equal measure. A week of replaying everything, seeing it all more clearly now that it's over.
A week of wondering what comes next.
I reach for my phone again. Not to swipe. Just to check the time.
And that's when I see it.
A text. From him.
The sun.
My breath catches.
I don't open it right away. I just stare at his name on the screen, feeling my heart speed up, my body suddenly awake in a way it hasn't been in weeks.
I thought I was past this.
I thought the clarity I'd found, the acceptance that he chose his life, that his path doesn't lead to me, meant I wouldn't feel this anymore.
But here it is. The pull. Immediate and undeniable.
I take a breath. Open the message.
"Hey. Been thinking about you. How are you?"
That's it. Casual. Light. Like we talk all the time.
Like he didn't disappear into his life so long ago. Like I haven't been carrying him in my chest this whole time, learning to hold the weight of him without needing him to be mine.
I set the phone down. Stand up. Walk to the kitchen.
Pour myself a glass of water. Drink it slowly. Feel the cool slide down my throat.
What do I say?
I could ignore it. Protect myself. Keep the distance I've worked so hard to build.
Or I could respond. Risk the pull. Let him back in, even knowing where this leads... nowhere.
I walk back to the couch. Sit down. Pick up my phone.
And I realize: I don't want to protect myself from this.
I want to talk to him.
Not because I think it will change anything. Not because I'm hoping he'll suddenly choose me.
But because this, this quality of knowing, is so rare.
And I miss it.
I type: "Hey. I'm good. How are you?"
I hit send before I can second-guess it.
The response comes almost immediately.
"I'm good, what's new?"
I think for a moment, how much do I say? "Not much, just navigating life."
"Yeah? Tell me about it."
I smile despite myself. Of course he'd ask. Of course he'd want to know.
I type: "Trying to figure out what I actually want vs. what I think I should want."
"Hmmm. Interesting, and what is that?"
And just like that, we're in it.
I tell him about the good man.
Not everything. Just some small details, the logic of it, the effort, the way it looked right on paper but felt wrong in my body.
"So what are you learning?"
I pause. Stare at the question.
What am I learning?
I type slowly: "That I can't logic my way into feeling something."
There's a pause. Longer this time.
Then: "That makes sense. You'll figure it out, you always do."
My chest tightens.
Like he knows me. Like he's been paying attention all this time, even from a distance.
"What about you?" I type. "How's your world?"
And he tells me. About work. About projects he is working on, the life he's creating.
The life that doesn't include me.
But he doesn't say it like that. He just... shares. Like we're friends. Like this is normal.
And maybe it is.
The conversation goes on.
An hour. Two. Three.
We talk about everything, dating, faith, what it means to build a life, what it means to surrender to what you can't control.
He asks questions I didn't know I needed to answer. I ask questions he doesn't deflect, well sometimes.
It's late now. Past bedtime. The room is dark except for the glow of my phone screen.
And I realize: This is what I've been missing.
Not him, exactly.
But this.
This depth. This ease. This quality of knowing where you don't have to explain yourself because the other person already understands.
This is so rare.
I've been swiping through profiles, going on dates, trying to find someone who fits.
But what I'm really looking for is this... someone I can talk to like this. Someone who sees me and doesn't need me to perform or prove or convince.
Someone who just... knows.
And he does.
But he chose his life.
His path doesn't lead to me.
And I'm learning, slowly, painfully, to carry this knowing without needing it to become something it can't be.
The conversation winds down.
"Get some sleep," he texts.
"Enjoy the rest of your night."
"It's good to talk to you."
"You too."
I set my phone down. Sit in the quiet.
My body is awake. My mind is spinning. My heart is full and aching at the same time.
This is the paradox I'm learning to live inside.
The pull is real. The knowing is real. The depth is real.
But so is the reality that he's building a life that doesn't include me.
And I can hold both.
I can feel the pull and not chase it.
I can recognize the depth and not need it to be my future.
I can carry him, the real him, all his complexity and dimensions, without needing him to be mine.
That's what moving forward looks like.
Not leaving everything behind.
But learning to carry what's real without letting it stop me from building my life.
I stand up. Walk to my bedroom. Climb into bed.
The sheets are cool against my skin. The room is dark and quiet.
And I feel it, the pull, the knowing, the bittersweet clarity of loving someone whose path doesn't lead to you.
But I also feel something else:
Strength.
Because I can hold this. I can feel this. I can carry this.
And still keep moving forward.
