Stirring Whispers | The Walk
I'm walking this afternoon, and I don't know where I'm going.
Not lost. Just... wandering. Letting my feet choose the direction.
I've walked this neighborhood a hundred times, but today it feels different. The sun is different. The sky is different. Or maybe I'm different, and everything else is just reflecting that back to me.
I turn left at the corner instead of right. I don't know why. My body just pulls that way, and I follow.
There's a street I've never noticed before. Or maybe I have noticed it, but I've never paid attention. It's narrow, lined with trees, the kind of street that feels like it's holding a secret.
I walk down it slowly, noticing everything. The way the light filters through the leaves. The sound of wind chimes somewhere I can't see. The smell of something
blooming, my favorite jasmine, and maybe, honeysuckle.
And I realize: I'm noticing direction.
Not in a big way. Not like a sign or a voice or a sudden clarity about where my life is going.
Just... small pulls. Small tugs. The way my body turned left instead of right.
The way I chose this street over that one. The way I'm walking slower than usual, like I'm looking for something even though I don't know what it is.
But Moon, what if I'm making this up?
I can't face that yet.
So I keep walking.
I notice the way the light is starting to shift, the way the afternoon is moving toward evening. The way the air is cooling, the way the shadows are getting longer.
And I think: Maybe this is what direction feels like.
Not a clear path. Not a voice saying, "Go this way." Just... small pulls. Small choices. Small movements that feel right even when I can't explain why.
But what if "feels right" is just another way of saying "I'm making this up as I go"?
What if my body isn't guiding me? What if it's just moving, and I'm the one assigning meaning to it because I need to believe that all this stillness prepared me for something?
I reach the end of the street, and it opens up into a small park I've never seen before. There's a bench under a tree, and the light is falling through the leaves in a way that makes everything look golden.
I sit down.
Not because I feel called to. Or maybe because I feel called to. I don't know.
I just sit.
And I try to feel what's true.
Is this direction? Or is this just me, sitting on a bench, hoping that if I sit
here long enough, I'll figure out what I'm supposed to do next?
The breeze picks up, and I close my eyes. I feel it on my face, cool and gentle. I feel the bench beneath me, solid and real. I feel my body, tired from walking, grateful for the rest.
And I think: Maybe I don't have to know.
Maybe direction doesn't have to announce itself. Maybe it doesn't have to feel certain or clear or undeniable.
Maybe it's just this. Small pulls. Small choices. Small movements that feel right even when I can't prove they are.
I don't know, and I'm sitting here on this bench, trying to trust something I can't prove is real.
Trying to believe that my body knows things my mind doesn't.
Trying to hold the possibility that maybe, just maybe, I'm being called toward something even if I can't see it yet.
But also holding the fear that I'm making it all up.
That there's no direction. No calling. No pull.
Just me, walking, sitting, hoping that if I pay attention long enough, meaning will emerge from the randomness.
Both feel true.
I feel pulled. And I feel like I'm inventing the pull.
I feel guided. And I feel like I'm making up the guidance.
I feel like my body knows where it's going. And I feel like I'm just moving, and then retroactively calling it direction because I need to believe I'm going somewhere.
I open my eyes. The light is still golden. The park is still quiet. The bench is still solid beneath me.
And I'm still here.
Still walking. Still noticing. Still trying to trust what I can't yet prove.
Still holding the question: Is this direction? Or am I making it up?
Maybe I'll never know for sure.
Maybe the only honest thing I can do is keep walking, keep noticing, keep feeling for the pulls even when I'm not sure they're real.
Keep listening, even when I'm terrified I'm listening to nothing.
—Still here, still walking, still trying to trust what I can't yet name
